Shak’s World Community Centre (SWCC) will use basketball, innovation, and mentorship as a bridge to youth employment, education, and training.
SWCC’s youth-led urban community development project tackle the underlying issues leading to youth addiction, homelessness, and mental health challenges.
We offer both paid and drop in programming. Our drop in programming runs Monday-Friday for ages 7-17 includes open gym, private gym, leadership skill building, arts, photography, and influencer training. Our paid programming includes semi-private/private basketball training (guard skills, ball handling, shooting) and comes with a uniform.
We welcome community members to utilize our 12,000 + square foot facility by renting out our different rooms for various types of celebrations and corporate events. Our gym is also available to rent, for more information please give us a call.

“Shanicka Edwards brings an infectious energy to the game of basketball. Even with her relatively small stature she’s brings a huge presence to the gym. She has an extensive knowledge and passion for the game that overflows onto the individuals she works with.”Sylvester Muary
“Shanicka IS a visionary. She has and continues to manifest her dreams that revolve around helping others and making our world a better place. She is a goal setter and a go getter. She is building her legacy that this community and far beyond will feel and see the benefits from for generations to come. She is unstoppable on her journey of becoming a greater version of who she already is and by helping those around her to ignite their passions and implement action to fulfill their own dreams.”Shane L.S Dennis
“Shanicka is a very devoted inspirational mentor for young talent. Our family has known Shanicka for few years, and within those few years, she has made a difference coaching our kids. Shanicka (Shak) makes sure and gets down to their level, and helps them until they accomplish what they want to achieve.”Mary PelteirSalient Corp
“The Mentors are still a big part of my daughter’s live and I can honestly say that she has become an incredible young lady who now is aspiring to become a Mentor herself to give back to younger kids so they won’t have to go through what she did as well she wants to get certified to become a basketball coach too! THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT HER MENTORS!!!! Also, I work for a Law Firm in Toronto and we specialize in Youth matters. I firmly believe if there were more programs i.e. Mentorship Programs and Youth Centres that a lot of my kids (clients) would not end up in trouble with the law. Most of my kids really just need a good mentor to help guide them in the right direction!”Christine Collins
“There are no words that can explain how wonderful this young lady is and all what she does within her community and beyond! Shanicka Edwards is an overcomer of many adversities come to think of it she should defiantly write a book about her life. Bold, courageous, brave, talented, smart, beautiful, giving and most of all a true, rare gift to our world. She is on a mission to inspire, educate and bring awareness to the importance of letting all youth know they are special people. “Through the love of her playing basketball she sends the message loud and clear while coaching to all student athletes they all to play on the same field with character, positive mind set creating mental toughness, unity among their peers and acceptance of one another. Leadership skills are incredible and devoted to all her clients."”Joy Foster
“The mission of Shak’s World is to create respectful and successful athletes and community members through an uplifting experience for young athletes and teams of all ages and skill levels. Through her work with Shak’s World, Shanicka is on a mission to permanently change the mentality of youth in the Barrie area. Her efforts are founded on the premise that a sports organization can create a more unified community. The goal is to deliver both athletic and community development for youth of every age and athletic ability. Through this endeavour, Shanicka supports youth mental health programming across the community. The proceeds from every fundraising initiative she has launched are directed toward local programming that allows children to participate in basketball, and create bonds with local mentors and businesses.”Andrea KhanjinMPP for Innisfil Barrie
“The children Shak trains respond well to her direction and guidance. As a director of established academy we asked for her help the last summer and when she briefly worked with us Shanicka left a lasting impression on our campers. The athletes have fun and learn the game basketball when she coaches.”Shaun Cross
“My son first told me about Shak and her work in 2017 when he participated in a community 3 on 3 tournament she ran to raise awareness and funds to support youth mental health. He found her to be approachable, kind and a wonderful leader that he could look up too. Three years later he feels the same way and as a person of colour in a predominately white city, it is important for him to experience black leaders in his community.”Anita Kent
